FAQ - What to expect from TENCEL™ Lyocell

      What is TENCEL™?

TENCEL™ is a branded lyocell fibre made from sustainably sourced wood pulp, primarily eucalyptus, and produced by Lenzing AG in Austria, the company that invented the fibre. It's made through a closed-loop process that uses a non-toxic solvent and recycles up to 99.8% of the water and chemicals used. The result is a breathable, naturally soft fibre that's biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and one of the most sustainably produced fabrics in the world.

Is TENCEL™ environmentally friendly and biodegradable?

Yes! TENCEL™ is biodegradable and made from natural resources, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to many other fabrics. The production process uses sustainable practices, such as recycling water and solvents, reducing waste and chemical runoff. It’s an eco-conscious fabric that decomposes naturally without leaving harmful traces behind.

      Is Soon After's TENCEL™ certified?

Yes! Our TENCEL™ Lyocell bedding is certified by Lenzing AG and meets high environmental standards. It’s also certified under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, which ensures that the fabric is free from harmful substances and safe for human health.

Learn more about Lenzing AG's certifications here.

Are Soon After sheets good for hot sleepers?

TENCEL™ Lyocell is naturally temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking, it draws heat and moisture away from your body and releases it quickly, so you stay cool in summer and comfortable in winter without overheating. It's one of the best fabric choices for people who sleep hot.

      Does TENCEL™ pill over time?

TENCEL™ is more resistant to pilling than most fabrics. Its smooth, uniform fibre structure reduces friction, keeping your bedding looking fresh for longer. Some pilling can occur overtime with heavy use, but it's far less common than with cotton.

Can I use these sheets if I'm allergic to eucalyptus?

Yes. Our sheets are made from eucalyptus wood pulp that's fully processed into fibre - the oils, proteins, and fragrances that typically trigger eucalyptus allergies are not present in the final fabric. If you have a severe known eucalyptus allergy, we'd recommend checking with a healthcare professional first.

Is TENCEL™ hypoallergenic? Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes. TENCEL™ Lyocell is naturally hypoallergenic, gentle on sensitive and eczema-prone skin, resistant to bacteria and odour, and free from the synthetic chemicals that can irritate in other fabrics. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification means every component of our bedding has been tested safe against skin.

Is TENCEL™ suitable for babies or children?

Yes. TENCEL™ Lyocell is an excellent choice for little ones - naturally hypoallergenic, free from harsh chemicals, and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, meaning every component has been independently tested safe against skin. Its natural moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties are also ideal for babies and children who tend to overheat at night.

Do Soon After sheets get softer over time?

Yes! One of TENCEL™ Lyocell's best qualities is that it softens with every wash. Unlike cotton, which can stiffen over time, TENCEL™ becomes progressively softer and more comfortable the more you use and wash it.

Are Soon After sheets good for homes with pets?

Yes. The 400 thread count sateen weave is naturally fur-repellent, pet hair sits on the surface rather than embedding in the fabric, making it much easier to remove. The fabric is also bacteria and odour-resistant.

For cat owners: the tightly woven sateen construction holds up better to light contact than loose-weave linens or percale. We'd still recommend keeping claws trimmed for the longest lifespan.

FAQ - TENCEL™ vs Cotton, Linen & Bamboo

How does TENCEL™ Lyocell compare to cotton sheets?

TENCEL™ is similar in feel to high-quality cotton, but softer, more breathable, and more sustainable. The key difference is moisture management: cotton absorbs and holds moisture, which can leave warm sleepers feeling damp through the night. TENCEL™ wicks moisture away and releases it, keeping you drier and more comfortable. TENCEL™ is also naturally hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating as inherent fibre properties - in cotton, these qualities depend heavily on the weave, thread count, and finishing process.

How does TENCEL™ Lyocell compare to linen?

Both breathe well and regulate temperature, but they feel very different. Linen has a textured, slightly crisp quality that softens gradually over time. TENCEL™ is smooth and soft from the very first wash, with a fluid drape against the skin. It's also easier to care for — no ironing needed, no stiff break-in period. If you find linen a little rough at first, TENCEL™ tends to feel instantly comfortable.

How does TENCEL™ Lyocell compare to bamboo sheets?

Most bamboo bedding is actually bamboo viscose, and while bamboo as a plant is sustainably grown, the viscose manufacturing process is a different story. It uses carbon disulfide, a toxic solvent that poses serious health risks to factory workers and is frequently released into the environment when not properly managed. There is also no organic certification for bamboo viscose - the chemical process destroys any organic integrity of the original plant.

TENCEL™ Lyocell uses a closed-loop process with a non-toxic solvent recycled at up to 99.8%. Both fibres are soft and breathable, but on environmental integrity from fibre to fabric, TENCEL™ is in a different category.

FAQ - The Soon After Details

Is Soon After an Australian brand?

Yes. Soon After is a Sydney-based brand with a physical showroom in Balmain, NSW at 499 Darling Street. Every order is picked and packed by one of our founders. We also offer free Click & Collect at the Balmain showroom.

      What makes Soon After different?

Material: 100% certified TENCEL™ Lyocell, not a blend, not standard lyocell. Our fabric is custom-woven exclusively for Soon After using Lenzing AG fibre, the company that invented the fibre, at a certified mill. Nothing off the shelf.

Small batch: We produce in limited runs using the best quality TENCEL™ fibre. Every order is picked and packed by our founders.

The details: Unique colour-ways, deep fitted sheet sides (up to 50cm), deep pillowcase flaps, directional tags, corner ties, and invisible zippers. Every detail thought through.

What is a sateen weave and why does it matter?

Sateen weave means threads float over more surface area, creating a smooth, lustrous finish that feels luxurious against the skin. It's softer than percale (a crisper, matte weave) and holds its shape over time. At 400 thread count, Soon After's sateen weave strikes the balance between softness, durability, and breathability.

Will the colours fade after washing?

We use AZO-free dyes - non-toxic and more colourfast than standard dyes. With cold machine washing and air drying (as recommended), colours stay vibrant wash after wash.

      Do Soon After sheets wrinkle?

TENCEL™ is naturally more wrinkle-resistant than linen or cotton percale. Some light creasing may occur, air drying in the shade minimises this. No ironing needed.

What fitted sheet depth do you offer?

Our fitted sheets have deep sides: 40cm for Double, and 50cm for Queen and King - suitable for most standard and thick mattresses.

      What sizes are available?

We offer Double, Queen, and King across all fitted sheets, flat sheets, and duvet covers. Pillowcases are one standard size.

Can I mix and match colours?

Yes. Every Soon After product is sold separately as well as in sets, and all colours - Goldie, Whisper Pink, and Forevergreen, are designed to work together. Mix and match freely.

      Are your products vegan?

Yes. All Soon After products are made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell, a plant-based fibre derived from wood pulp. No animal fibres, no animal by-products.
